So I have this weird issue with volume drops on one of my basses lately--it cuts out entirely when I put pressure on the volume knob. I think it has to do with the ground wire that goes to the treble pot from the bridge so I'm going to have to take the strings off to investigate... but I know that bass necks don't like this.

What do I do to keep my bass neck happy? Should I totally slacken the rods and just expect a complete re-setup after the fact? :-/

Oops, I should have put this in the "setup" section. Could the webmaster move it for me? Sorry.

It is safe to remove all the strings for a short while, certainly more than long enough for you to do what you need without loosening the truss rods. Go for it, Joshua!

Let them down easily turning each peg a few times until they are all slack. If you're wanting to replace them, cut them with wire cutters so the silk portion wrapped around the tuners doesn't risk dinging anything as you withdraw the strings from the tailpiece.

Pushing a volume knob makes a volume drop? Hmm. That sounds like a pot problem, not a ground wire problem. Which bass is this happening on?

It's happen on the 2009 4003. I think it's because pushing the pot causes something to touch something else--grounding the signal. Pulling back up on the pot--the knob is fastened tight--fixes it. But when you're twisting the volume knob you also push down a bit and I don't want this to happen too often. Basically I think I just need to get in there and push things further apart. That's my hunch.

You don't need to even slacken the strings to get the pickguard off a 4003 - just lift them slightly around the neck pickup and the guard comes out sideways.

There's definitely no issue with taking all the strings off at once. I know very well that some people think otherwise, but like every other repairer I routinely take all the strings off the instruments I work on, both guitars and basses - that's literally thousands of instruments in the last twenty-plus years just for me personally, let alone all the other thousands of techs - and there has not ever been one single problem from doing so. So respectfully, I have to say that it's a myth.

I've found if your bass has a neck toaster you have to back the strings off about 4-8 twists of the tuners to give you enough clearence to get those long magnet poles out....

Like Blue Angel said, it will not fuss the neck at all unless the neck is crook to start with...

Don't be too sensitive about necks and strings... it's not like you're going to leave it string-less for months... Some people are just a little too sensitive about the littlest thing.

I appreciate what you're saying. Mainly I just want to be careful. I tend to "baby" the things I love and/or enjoy.
